acute coronary syndromes. The areas of ischemia and injury represent compromised
but salvageable tissue in zones of reduced blood flow. In this zone, called
the <FONT COLOR="#FFFFFF">penumbra</FONT><I>, </I>the blood supply is inadequate
to maintain normal myocardial functions. The penumbra is viable up to several
hours from the primary onset of arterial occlusion. The myocardium in the
penumbra dies (infarcts) if not salvaged by reperfusion strategies such
as thrombolytic agents or angioplasty. The ECG manifestations of ischemia,
injury, and infarction are discussed in the section <I><FONT SIZE=+1>Infarct
Localization</FONT>. <BR>
